In Memory of Arthur Souter

The Club was sad to hear of the recent passing of Arthur Souter. Arthur, affectionately known as “Toops” due to his distinguished hairpiece, made a valuable contribution to the Club as a Committee man, scorer, and volunteer.

Arthur came to the Club when his son Mark commenced with NDCC in the 1995/96 season. Arthur had known Club secretary Jim Barrett through the HK&HDCA Executive Committee. He had started the first Kanga Cricket sessions for West Pennant Hills when Kanga Cricket started in the early 1990s and took over from Jim as the Association’s Kanga Cricket Co-ordinator from 1994-1998. Arthur also started girls’ cricket at West Pennant Hills-Cherrybrook CC (WPHCCC). Arthur was also a Life Member of WPHCCC.

Arthur’s first volunteering role with NDCC was as Northern District Cup Co-ordinator working with Tom Richmond in the 1997/98 season before taking on the role solo in the following seasons right up until his retirement from the Club at the end of the 2008/09 season.

Arthur joined the NDCC Committee in 1998/99 and took on the role as Assistant Treasurer in 1999/00 a position he held until the 2008/09 season.

Arthur soon became part of the furniture at NDs. Arthur Souter was scorer for the successful Poidevin-Gray Shield premiership teams of 1999/00, 2002/02 and 2002/03. Arthur was also scorer for the Second-Grade premiership teams of 1999/00, 2001/02 and 2005/06.

There is a legion of players who passed through teams where Arthur was scorer and will remember him with great affection. Arthur’s contribution as a Committee member was first-class at a time when volunteers were thin on the ground. Arthur gave it 100% every time.

He will be remembered for his good natured, selfless contribution to cricket for our Club and the wider cricket community.

There will be a remembrance service for Arthur Souter at St Faith’s Anglican Church, 5-9 Clarke St, Narrabeen on Monday 8th July at 1pm.

All welcome.
